Art of the Song

Celebrating Great Songwriters and Stories

OVERVIEW

Founded in 2003 by husband-wife team, John Dillon & Viv Nesbitt, Art of the Song is a weekly syndicated radio program exploring creativity through the lens of songwriting and music performance. For 21 years, the music and interview show was heard on over 100 public and community stations across North America. Each episode features a long-form interview with a successful musician or group highlighted by their music. Most episodes have a segment called the Creativity Corner which is an audio essay on any subject relating to creativity in general. The overall mission of the show is to inspire listeners to find and express their creative voices.

THE STORY

When we first started the Art of the Song in late 2003, we made a list of the artists we’d like to interview. We dreamt big from our mountain home in New Mexico with Jackson Browne at the top of the list. For just over 21 years we have had the incredible experience discovering the creative processes of so many musicians that have influenced our musical world in positive ways. So we thought it would be fitting and appropriate for our final weekly broadcast to be a repeat of the 2021 Jackson Browne interview (listen here).

Although we have retired from the weekly production of Art of the Song, you can listen to over a hundred episodes from the archive here.

Now, we are leaning more deeply into our personal creative activities: Vivian is exploring writing as well as the art of dressage and cross country with her retired thoroughbred racehorse, Norton. John is writing collaborative songs and performing concerts in the recovery community.

We’re bringing Mother Jones in Heaven: a musical by Si Kahn back to the stage. Her powerful voice will be needed more than ever during the next four years. In October, we’ll be heading to Bloomsburg, PA to the esteemed Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble. We are looking for more opportunities along the way. Let us know if you’d like to bring Si Kahn's Mother Jones to your town! More info here.

John’s work with people recovering from substance use disorder is blossoming. He now visits several treatment centers every month to do writing workshops and concerts. Since he began this work only a few years ago, he has written over 80 songs and performed them to offer hope and healing to people affected by the disease. Learn more here.

We deeply appreciate your support over the years. You have helped bring the conversation full circle. We'll be posting music, essays, and other content (maybe even some reports on Viv's progress with her horse!) on our Patreon page. We hope you will continue to support our creative journey as we forge these new pathways.

Moving forward we focus on what we can do in our own small ways to bring light and love to the world as we navigate these challenging times.

Onward!

John & Viv

"John and Viv, wow, I cannot express how thankful I am… You captured everything about that conversation we had. Thank you so much. I am grateful that you let people see me for who I am. Peace, Kemp."
